Grimes joined the Meridian School District in the fifth grade.

David Matthew Grimes was born on Oct. 4, 2001, at Decatur Memorial Hospital in Decatur, Il., to Derrick and Amanda Grimes. He has a younger sister named Haley Grimes.
Grimes plans to join the U.S. Navy after high school. He chose this branch because his favorite uncle was a Petty Officer First Class (E-6) Engineman aboard the USS Grasp. After the military, he is unsure what career path he wants to follow.
Grimes joined the Meridian School District in the fifth grade and participated in basketball for one year. Outside of school, Grimes spends his time playing video games, spending time with his family, and hanging out with friends.
Grimes looks forward to graduating and starting his adult life, though he will miss being at home and his friends.
A memory that stands out to Grimes is former middle school history teacher Shawn Conlins’ eighth grade Washington D.C. trip. Grimes says he remembers nights in the hotel with Braeden Durbin, Tyler Schilz, Derek McLaughlin, Alex Martin and others playing Beanboozled and laughing at the reactions of his peers. Grimes says he also remembers the late nights on the charter bus and all his friends sneaking on food from the restaurants they visited.
Another memory would be from junior year when the National Guard brought in an inflatable obstacle course. Grimes raced Derek McLaughlin through, bouncing and sliding, and remembers hurling himself over the top of the slide and sliding down onto the floor. Once there, Grimes says he was so sure he’d won, only to find McLaughlin had beaten him. McLaughlin helped him up and the two laughed it off together.
Grimes says though he won’t miss the classes, he would like his fellow classmates to know he wishes them the best and hopes they all get their dream jobs.
