In New Berlin, on the week of November 20 at the Gene Bergschnieder Turkey Tournament, the Meridian Hawks opened their season with five basketball games in one week.

The Hawks had a game every day, with the exception of Thanksgiving and Sunday, in their opening week of competition. In their first five games, the Hawks finished with a record of 3-2. Meridian super-fan, Nathan Berger, said, “They looked good in the first couple of games I saw. They are going to be scary when they all find their swagger.”

Meridian’s starting lineup consists of three seniors, one junior, and a sophomore. Sophomore starting forward, Jacob Jones, says, “There was tough competition, and that helped me get more varsity playing time before the regular season starts.” In the long term, Jones says, “I am looking to make a deep run in the postseason.”

The first tournament may not have gone exactly how the Hawks wanted, but senior guard Cameron Getz was named to the all-tournament team, which is voted on by other coaches. Getz averaged 17.4 points per game in the tournament. Getz says, “I think it was a good way to go out of a tournament I have been playing in since my sophomore year…It was a good warm-up for the tough season we have ahead of us.”
