On Friday, November 17, all of senior Cameron Getz’s practice paid off when he signed to become a Division One college athlete. Now at Illinois State University, Getz is moving on from high school to compete at the next level.

Getz took nearly three weeks to make his decision. He had narrowed it down between Southern Illinois University Carbondale and ISU. Getz says he ended up choosing ISU because, “I felt it was a better fit for me, for my track career, and my academic career.” He had decided on ISU a week prior to the signing and confirmed with them the following Saturday morning of his decision.

“Making the decision was the most stressful part,” says Getz. “I love both schools very much and making the decision was probably the toughest part for me.”

Getz’s father, Jim Getz, was watching his son go through this and knew he would make the right decision. According to J. Getz, the biggest role in his son’s signing was Cameron himself. “The effort he put into his athletics and his academics to get to that point, I think was really him,” said J. Getz with a slight smile on his face. J. Getz then went on to say, “He’s also got older brothers and sisters, as you know, who have also always competed, and maybe that pushed him harder. But at the end of the day, he’s the one who pushed himself.”

C. Getz did push himself in track, and one person who took notice was his head track coach, Tony Klein. Klein said that once Getz focused on track, instead of juggling it with baseball, he was able to isolate himself and get better.

Klein does not claim the success to Getz, but instead gives it to his high jump coach who Getz spends most of his time with. What Klein does claim is, “He’s a hard worker. You can’t tire him out.” However, Klein thinks it’s possible the odds may be against him with Getz not being the typical high jumper, but he thinks Getz will work hard and receive a good college education.

“He has just been one of those people. He is the most pleasurable kid I’ve ever coached in my life.”
