Illinois Journalism Education Association hosts a Zoom meeting to honor new members to the All-State Journalism Team. Meridian’s Robert Le Cates (bottom right) was named as one of members for his work on Meridian Moments Yearbook and The Meridian Daily online news.

Robert Le Cates, who served on the Meridian Moments Yearbook staff for the first time this year, has already experienced a busy summer. Le Cates has been named a co-editor for the 2021 yearbook, Editor-in-Chief for The Meridian Daily online news, and on May 30 was named an All-State Journalism team member.

“The chance of being on the team presented itself whenever my advisor, Sheila Moore, met with me after school. She mentioned how hard I had been working and that she would want to nominate me for the All-State journalism team,” Le Cates said. “I was over the top excited.”

The nomination process requires the nominee to submit three pieces of work with an explanation for each, an essay discussing their work on staff, a letter of commendation from their adviser and a nomination form.

In Moore’s recommendation letter, she described a staff member who has “found his place at Meridian. He is an outstanding photographer. Students who didn’t know his name a year ago, now come to my room asking ‘did Robert take pictures at the game?’ They love answering his questions in the stands, the sidelines, the hallways. They know he loves his job and that he will cover them in a flattering way.”

Le Cates was celebrated at a virtual ceremony on Saturday, May 30.  Watch the event here. Le Cates’ portion begins at 43:00.

“I entered a yearbook spread, one of my photos I took at a basketball game, and my first article,” Le Cates said.

Le Cates will also reap the rewards next year by helping lead the 2021 yearbook staff. He will travel to Kansas City to attend Elite Weekend and Orlando to attend the national high school journalism convention. He will also lead the new staff of The Meridian Daily online news.

Moore, for the first time, will nominate a student for Illinois Journalist of the Year. Based on his work so far, she believes that student will be Le Cates.
