Ariana Grande’s newest album, Positions, was released on October 30, 2020. Grande had been teasing a new album for quite some time so it was a relief to her fans to see a new album dropped. Positions features collaborations with Doja Cat, the Weekend, and Ty Dolla Sign. Positions shows definite musical maturity from Grande and some think that the album might even start a “new age” of Grande music as it appears she’s leaving the “bubblegum pop” sound behind.

Grande was born in Boca Raton, Florida and got her start by acting on the Nickelodeon show Victorious. She was then signed with Republic Records for her YouTube covers of popular songs. Her debut album Yours Truly was released September 3, 2013 and since then she has released a total of six albums (Positions being the 6th).

Grande’s album carries through the same R&B, trap-pop flavors of her previous albums, but we can also see some experimentation with other genres not heard as often in her music. No album is ever just like the one before and I think this is a major reason Grande fans seem to keep coming back for more.

Grande’s album was musically very well done, one of the few negative comments I would have for the album is that all of the songs sound very much the same even in lyrics. The album lacks the diversity in sound and message of her previous albums. Not to say all the songs are exactly the same, but they are just very similar. Some people might really like the similarity. Personally, I didn’t mind, but I could definitely see where someone might get bored.

Overall, I really enjoyed this album. In some ways, Positions took me back to Yours Truly, back when I first fell completely in love with Grande and her music. Positions showcased Grande’s amazing voice and talent. Grande fans can only wait and imagine what she could do to top Positions, but while we wait for a new album, we’ve got a killer one to listen to right now.
