Covid-19 has caused worldwide panic and fear. Businesses are shut down, workers can’t do their job, and students are out of school. What does this amount to? Boredom. Most people spend their days sitting at home, not allowed to leave. They can’t work, can’t go out to eat, and can’t even go to the movie theater to see a new movie. However, there are tons of great things to do while you sit bored at home. To make up for the lack of ability to go see a movie in theaters, most of us have some sort of viewing platform at home. Whether that’s cable, Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, or any other sort of subscription, there are still tons of great shows and movies out there to watch while stuck inside. Now is your time to save the world by sitting on your couch watching Netflix. In no particular order, here is a list of 15 movies and shows to get you through your surplus of boredom.
1. The Mandalorian
The Mandalorian is Disney’s first live-action Star Wars show. It can be described as a “space western.” It tells the tale of a bounty hunter making his way through a galaxy far, far away. The Mandalorian manages to capture an element of the original Star Wars movies while still remaining an independent series. The Mandalorian can be found on Disney+, along with the original Star Wars films.
2. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse
This movie is an inspiring comic book-like film that tells the story of Miles Morales, a teenage Spider-Man. However, there’s a twist: he’s not the only Spider-Man to exist. The film expands into a multi-verse story of other “Spider-People” from different dimensions. All of the characters have different backgrounds and experience, but together they rise up to form the biggest hero that their world(s) needed. This movie is filled with great positive themes that would cheer up anyone who is feeling sad during their quarantine. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse can be found on Netflix and Amazon Prime.
3. The Act
The Act is a true-crime series that tells the story of a toxic relationship between Gypsy Blanchard and her overprotective mother. Gypsy is on the search for independence from her mother, and it eventually leads to murder. The Act is heart-wrenching from all perspectives and gets more and more interesting as the story unfolds. The Act can be found on Hulu and Amazon Prime.
If you want a movie that will cause you to think, Inception is for you. This film stars Leonardo DiCaprio as a professional thief taking on one last job: stealing information from someone’s subconscious. Inception is all about the visuals, so if you love camera work, this movie is for you. This movie boasts an amazing cast and is definitely a mind-bender. 5. The Office
The Office is quite possibly the most iconic comedy show of all time. It’s a hilarious documentary-like series that shows the daily lives of people working at Dunder Mifflin Paper Company. The Office is filled with the themes of love, laughter, and playfulness that takes place at any 9-5 office job. This show is most definitely binge-worthy and if you tried hard enough, you could likely finish the show in just a few weeks. The Office can be found on Netflix and Amazon Prime.
During sad times like these, it’s always great to relive the happy days of your childhood. Up tells the heartwarming story of an old man, Carl Fredricksen, fulfilling his life-long dream of flying away with thousands of balloons tied to his home. Along the way, Carl meets a little boy named Russel. Up is a touching film filled with a sense of love and change. Up is on Disney+ and Amazon Prime.
7. I Am Not Okay with This
I Am Not Okay with This is a new teen comedy/drama series. Based on a graphic novel, this series tells a funny and relatable story of a high school girl who can move things with her mind. I Am Not Okay with This is new on Netflix.
8. Saturday Night Live
Saturday Night Live is one of the best ways to laugh. A show with 45 (yes, 45) seasons, it keeps up with the times. SNL is an American late-night TV comedy sketch series. It parodies modern culture and politics and is sure to make you break a smile during tough times. Saturday Night Live can be watched on Hulu and Amazon Prime.
9. The Haunting of Hill House
Things may be scary right now, but this show is definitely scarier. The Haunting of Hill House tells the story of the Crain family and their childhood trauma that took place in a gothic mansion. This series isn’t just a family drama: it dives deep into the psychological problems of the main characters, and in addition to their own personal ghosts and memories haunting them, there are very real ghosts haunting the family. The show is extremely suspenseful and intense and very easy to get absorbed into. The Haunting of Hill House is available on Netflix and Amazon Prime.
10. Breaking Bad
Breaking Bad tells the story of high school chemistry extraordinaire Walter White. After being diagnosed with lung cancer, he decides he wants to provide for his family before he passes away. He does this in the only way he can think of: by becoming a professional drug producer. Walter works his way up the business ladder and becomes consumed by the amounts of money he is making. This series is a heart-wrenching family drama filled with very real interpretations of drugs and how they affect people and their families. Breaking Bad can be found on Netflix and Amazon Prime, and if you enjoy the show, Netflix recently premiered a movie, El Camino, based off of one of the main characters.
11. Stranger Things
If you’re looking for another sci-fi series, Stranger Things might be for you. This popular sci-fi 80s thriller revolves around the lives of a group of high school students on a mission to save themselves from the threat of a very frightening monster. The show’s plot ranges from telekinesis to family problems and is sure to cause a laugh while instilling fear of the unknown. Stranger Things can be watched on Netflix.
12. Ferris Bueller’s Day Off
Ferris Bueller’s Day Off is a lighthearted teen-comedy that is sure to make you laugh. Seniors may be out of school, but we all know the feeling of “senioritis.” This film perfectly portrays that feeling. The main character, Ferris Bueller, perfectly mixes that charm and sarcasm of every high school boy. This film manages to touch on the feeling of losing your youth and approaches relationships with a maturity that not many teen-comedies have. 13. To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before
If you’re looking for a sweet teen-romance to brighten your day, this movie is for you. The story follows high school student and “nerd” Lara Jean once her biggest fear comes true: her love letters were delivered. When her old crush gets notified, they decide to create a fake relationship that soon stems into a real love story. This film lets you relive the days when you would “like-like” certain people and is a lighthearted story from start to finish. If you enjoyed Stranger Things, you’re sure to love Dark. Yet another brain-twister, Dark is a German sci-fi thriller that surrounds the past, present, and future lives of a boy and his friends. Set in the town of Winden, Germany, the series explores the existence of time and its effects after a local little boy’s disappearance. There are tons of hidden connections between the past and present along the way, and you soon find out that somehow, even the future affects the past. The series exposes the secrets of the local families and is sure to get you thinking. Dark can be viewed on Netflix.
15. Adventure Time
During stressful times, it’s always good to have a wholesome cartoon playing in the background. Adventure Time is a wonderfully animated fantasy adventure series. It tells the stories of a boy, Finn, and his dog, Jake, traveling in their world of wonder. This show can be for kids, teenagers, and adults alike. It has complicated themes as well as just cute calm things, which are perfect at a time like this. Adventure Time can be found on Hulu and Amazon Prime.
