If you haven’t heard already, Split is the recently released M. Night Shyamalan film that has had very strong mixed opinions.
The film centers around a group of teenage girls who get kidnapped by a man named Kevin who has dissociative identity disorder (DID). After getting knocked out and taken to a remote location, the three girls are forced into a small room and now are tasked with escaping Kevin and his multiple personalities.
While the three girls are trying to escape Kevin’s remote location, we sometimes cut to a session with Kevin and his therapist. In these breaks we, the viewers, get information about Kevin’s different personalities and his developing 25th. The 25th personality is called “The Beast” and was created by two of the personalities in Kevin’s mind.
The movie, however, has been getting a lot of backlash due to the mental illness subject matter, and in one scene, Kevin is seen wearing a dress. I personally didn’t find anything wrong with the movie myself and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The subject stayed on the girls and their plight for safety, and the survivors of the kidnapping and Kevin go through interesting character development. The end of the movie is open enough that it could end here or go for a sequel etcetera.
If you like horror movies that are more on the psychology side and less on shock or gore horror, this is the movie for you.
